Why is “Ma’am” considered disrespectful?

Post Body
According to this post and the comments after it, it’s apparently an insult to call a woman “Ma’am” now? I figured the teacher in the article simply didn’t identify as female and overreacted in the situation, but many of the posters said that the term is considered misogynistic or disrespectful in some places, which completely baffled me.
Am I getting Bernstein’d here? What’s the story?

Hell, I'm from southern Indiana and I'd say it's fair to use ma'am and madam, or madame interchangeably. To me at least it's just meant to be a respectful way of a addressing a woman. Ms applies to single woman, Mrs applies to married woman, and ma'am or madam applies to any woman, all regardless of age range in my mind
