What's going on with a Chinese spy balloon flying over US?

I just saw a few people talking about it in Twitter. Apparently there is a surveillance balloon spying over the U.S. but the government doesn't want to shoot it down. What would be the reason? Why wouldn't they shoot it down? Isn't it a violation of their airspace?

All I know is the Republican are having a field day with Biden shooting down that balloon. They’re like, “more material to bash Biden with”.
