How Do We Pray To Saints?

I was wondering hoe we pray too Saints I'm confused? I always pray too God but I've tried praying to the Virign Mary, The apostles Peter and Paul. I either ask.god directly to pass a message, kinda outta fear because of false idol worship. I just don't understand because I was raised Lutheran.
