Is it legal to keep an opossum as a pet in the US?

I only ask because I’ve kept some as pets many times, some large adults as well as babies and they’ve always gotten along with me. Not sure if I should. Continue the practice permanently with only one and care for it, they are quite tame where I live and don’t ever bite or hiss, intact I have hand fed a few(carefully) and they’ve been as respectful as I am to them.
