We got a text from a family member who knows we rescue animals, and next thing you know we had this little baby in our care.
He was very young, and seemingly had been attacked. His left arm was completely shattered, and his tail was chewed badly. But he was alive, moving, eating and drinking, so we thought there would be a chance.
At the vet, he got the works. All the medication he needed, proper nutrition and was scheduled for an amputation of his left arm. Other wise he was stable.
For five days he brought so much life and joy to our lives. He was curious and adorable, and as much as we tried to avoid it he bonded to us super quick.
He loved bananas and grapes, as well as various meats. His name was Jerry.
I’ve rescued many, but never had one pass in my care (luckily) until now. I’m… absolutely devastated.
He was fine, and then he hurt his arm again. We’re not sure how, as he had nowhere to climb and was in an entirely padded enclosure, but he did. He quickly went into shock, and we rushed him to our vet as fast as we could while I administered CPR. But unfortunately he passed while in transit.
I love rescuing these little guys. I wouldn’t change a thing, but at the same time there is a small hole that will never be filled. Due to his injury he was unreleasable, and we were looking forward to giving him the best and most full life, but he just couldn’t hang on anymore.
Just a warning if you do rescue: Soon enough you will loose one. It’s not my fault, I know that. And I know he was happy and warm and loved. But I also constantly think “maybe there was something else I could’ve done”.
Rest in peace Jerry. You were so loved, and the light of my life.
Edit: Thank you everyone. Your kinds words have meant so much to my fiancé and I during this time. I hope your animal journeys are filled with happiness and love, all of you.
