I deliver pizzas and spend 40 hours a week JAMMING in my car to all kinds of music. I have started going band to band and ranking all their music. This is the first time I am posting a ranking, but I will post my other bands as well. I spent about 3 months listening to only Opeth before I felt decent about this list.
All Opeth is amazing, lets be honest. This was brutally difficult to order, and I am still uncertain about many positions. I would love to hear any changes you would make!

I get where you're coming from but when you compare it to other albums of the genre from the time frame regardless of whether it's Norwegian or swedish or American; that was the sound. As an example you could compare it to Stormblast by dimmu borgir, any of the mayhem albums, Early death, at the gates, in flames, or Burzums Early stuff. The candle light records days from those first three albums are legendary, not saying that the contrast and comparison is the same as blackwater Park, but if you look at the studio and who was recording mastering an engineering it; The dude is an absolute legend in death metal and black metal. Also, while their songs might have been simpler, The writing and structure on those albums was phenomenal. It literally paved the way for the future of opeth and made some serious breakthroughs regarding death metal, black metal, progressive metal and the overall genius that opeth have developed into you over the years.
