My (38M) wife (45F) recently brought up the idea of possibly opening our marriage. We have been married for 19 years and have strong marriage and healthy sex life. We also have 2 adult children that live with us. We have obviously been through a lot over the years, but have overcome extensive times away while I was in the military. I am fairly inexperienced as she was my first sexual partner, although during a break before being married I did have several hook ups. She is more experienced having had 2 prior sexual relationships, and been with a total of 10 partners. We both also cheated one time each over 10 years ago, me more as retribution. I feel like we are in a really strong place currently and don’t want to do anything to mess up what we have. That being said we are both very busy individuals working 60-80s per week each, so we don’t have a lot of time together. I am also on the path to being a professional pilot in the next year or so which will lessen the work required to stay financially secure, but also cause me to be away from home on a consistent basis. She does not do well being alone for any period of time and gets lonely whereas I could be by myself for days and not stress it. The idea to open is definitely intriguing to me, but would prefer the arrangement be more causal dating, FWB, or one night stands rather than Poly. To me it’s mainly the fear of her developing feelings that has me hesitant as the idea of us sleeping with other people with permission would bother me much less and to be honest even the thought of her doing so excites me. We will live in South Florida in a large urban area, so finding people shouldn’t be impossible, and she has made it clear that on my nights away once I start flying I would have permission to seek opportunities as well as long as any agreements we make are kept.
