My partner and I adopted an 8month plott hound almost a month ago now. We love his personality as it has truly blossomed from the little poop eater that was too afraid to go outside the store for ANYTHING. Now he goes on hikes and runs with his big sister (3yr old GSD/akita). We want to start training him because we realize he understands cues such as food&water, saying bafu (bathroom in our chosen language), and even his crate word. We want him to get some basics down such as sit next to me, lay down, heel, and come here. However there are a few issues.
Come here: If he has a comfy spot, he will not budge despite whatever treat or item you hold. He doesnt move until i approach but then he looks anxious and tries to make a run for the door. I end up picking him up bc id rather him understand he has to do it regardless rather than build a habit of him only coming after the 8th time I said to.
Even when trying to train sit, it seems as if he understands because he will look to the side almost dismissively when I ask. during this I am typically sat on the couch or criss cross so that i can be more eye level so he isnโt as scared from the size difference. The times he does sit its in a way that backs away from me to where he cant even reach the treat.
Lastly to speak more on his personality, he is a true sweetheart, very lightfooted bc heโs curious unless my other dog smells it first then he body slams her out the way. So we see he is gaining confidence because he has another dog to relate to, but for the connection of trusting what I am training, Im struggling to get him to overcome his anxiety.
Do you guys think this is a matter of consistency and patience?
Or do I just not train for a bit and keep treats ready for the times he gives me attention or comes near me on his own and then move forward?
