Expiring G1 trying for G2

Good Evening! My first G1 expires mid Feb 2023 ( 1 for procrastination) and I live downtown Toronto around Spadina/Front. I do not own a car but still intend to get a license for potential road trips/rentals/emergencies etc. Couple of questions I would be grateful for help with:
- Can I renew my G1 before it expires or do I need to attempt a G2 to get the extension?
- If I do not plan to own a car and only choose to go for rentals from time to time, should I still do the insurance lowering course?
- I will be busy for a couple of weeks end of December so I realistically have just under 2 months. Is this sufficient time to prepare from scratch.
- If I do the BDE package road lessons but do not pass and my G1 license expires, will I have to redo the training? Will I also have to wait for the 8/12 months after re-acquiring my G1?
- I'm willing to travel around a bit but are there any driving schools someone can recommend around Spadina/Front?
