The Progressive Conservative Party has been chanting since the beginning of the election campaign that we have cancelled a plan without leaving a new plan. It is ridiculously hypocritical for a political party that has no significant plan for both the environment and public transit to claim to be standing up for transit.
We have a $96 billion transit plan, 75% funded by the provincial government, that will build a major network in 30 years. This three-stage transit plan will be constructing and expanding rapid transit across Ontario's towns and cities. Not only that, but we plan to establish a provincial transit agency that will work with municipal transit operators to better coordinate the delivery of public transportation, in a similar manner to BC Transit. The federal government is already providing close to $150 million a year to create and maintain such an agency, money that is completely dormant right now, to which we will add the same amount. The last part of this plan also includes going further with the Cullen government's proposal to make transit free in Ontario cities. While the federal government will fund free transit in Ontario cities, we will do the same in places that are not served by this measure.
Is that what you mean, Mr. Nym, by "The ONDP has no plan?''
I would suggest to the leader of the PC that he be of good faith and read our program, which, by the way, is a comprehensive, ambitious program that has the merit of including measures for all Ontarians: Economic measures, measures in education, for Ontario's francophones, for aboriginals and for many other important sectors and issues in our province.
Thank you,
