Why does Ontario do month-month leases?

Post Body

Hi all, I'm on this subreddit a lot and when it comes to evictions and all, I feel like most of the times, issues could be avoided if Ontario didn't switch to a month-month lease after the original lease expires..

Why don't the landlord and tenant decide to renew a lease if needed. When we rented our basement, we would always renew the lease after it had expired but even if we didn't, the original lease would just go into a month-month.

I feel like it would be better for both parties to know if/when the tenant has to leave or if they get to stay.

Thank you!
