Was Del initially a harsher character?

I assume most people see Del as a loveable rogue with a heart of gold. In the old IMDB message board for OFAH I recall a post where it was said in the early days of OFAH Del was potrayed as a selfish and manipulative character but as the series progressed Del's character was softened. Do you agree with this view?
