Is the Western meta really that limiting right now? Will OP-9 be better in terms of viable decks?

I'm beginning, and love playing so far, but I feel like I'm getting into the game and seeing a lot of comments like "that deck doesn't perform well, leader is weak, leader will be outclassed in a month, etc"
I don't necessarily want to run troll decks or silly fanboy decks, but I'd like to have access to cheaper decks, decks with fun mechanics, interesting synergies, etc. Right now doing research on decks makes me feel pigeon-holed, especially with the required cards for most black decks. It doesn't feel like a ton of variety!
