About the will of D (spoilers)

Recent chapters of the manga have made me wonder how many people actually belong to the clan of D, how many families have lost or forgotten who they are.
But that also made me think: what if there are families who aren't part of the clan of D, but they took or "stole" D and pretend to be part of the clan. It also made me think, maybe Teach and Rocks are so different from all other members of the clan because they aren't actual members of it.
If someone has theory about this I'd love to know about it!
