Oranges, Devil Fruits, and Joyboy
Post Body

The Thousand Sunny is an amazing ship built by one of the best shipwrights in the world. It carries the Going Merry's will, and perhaps more importantly the belongings of the crew. Among these being the Orange trees Nami brought from her home village.

At the end of the Punk Hazard arc we learned that devil fruits reincarnate themselves into nearby fruits.

The axolotl fruit reincarnating into a nearby apple.

In this same arc Monet, holder of the Snow fruit is killed by Caesar clown (thinking he was killing smoker but still.) We never do see the Snow fruit reincarnate. What I theorize as many have before, is that this fruit was reincarnated onto one of the Orange trees on the thousand sunny.

It is difficult to see, but on the upper deck you can see small fruit on those trees.

In this colored version it is a bit easier to make out.

Okay, that's fairly straightforward. A bit odd that the straw hats haven't noticed, but we need to remember the rapid pace of the story in the new world, in which it has only been a couple of months since Punk Hazard, and with crisis after crisis, it's possible the straw hats could have missed an orange on the tree becoming a devil fruit.

Now, have we seen someone gain the power of two devil fruits? Yes surprisingly enough in a character that we were introduced to in Jaya. Marshall D. Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard.

This image is unimportant but god is it a beautiful double page spread, and shows Blackbeard using the power of the Quake fruit after doing SOMETHING to gain that power.

There is one important thing we do not see Blackbeard do. Eat the second fruit. We know a tarp is thrown over Whitebeard after he is shot by the newly freed Blackbeard pirates, but we do not know what he did underneath the tarp. Presumably something involving the Darkness fruit, but we have no idea, and I don't wanna theorize on that.

Now, what happens if someone eats two fruits? Everyone is amazed that Blackbeard gains the power of two, and it is openly stated during the Water 7 Saga by Cipher Pol what happens if you eat two fruits.

You die. Supposedly.

Scholars have already explained devil fruits, perfect nothing to question! Except... we haven't seen that. While scholars are a great source of information, they are not necessarily trustworthy as their results could be edited by the World Government. Such as producing maps without some weird former island that never existed like Lulusia.

Now, what are devil fruits? Good question, I don't know. HOWEVER the smartest person in the one piece world has a theory.

A possibility someone desired

This I think is more to set up the idea that Luffy inherits the will of the Nika fruit. But what about Chopper? Does he inherit the will of the human fruit? Does Robin inherit the will of the Flower fruit? So on and so forth for everyone... I'm leaning towards no, only Zoans have that will of their own.

Why does this matter? I'm just laying out the information that we do have as canon.

Now, Blackbeard and Luffy have many mirrors of each other. One loves cherry pies, one loves the drink at Jaya. One spent years looking for the right fruit, one accidentally ate one because he was hungry. One sought out the position of Schichibukai to enter Impel Down and recruit individuals, another breaks into the prison to save their family. Currently there are very few things Luffy and Blackbeard have in common, and now I can get to the main idea of this.

Luffy is going to eat the snow fruit by accident.

If there is one thing we know about Monkey D. Luffy it is the fact he has an appetite that cannot be sated (except that one time with cracker) I believe that either:
• Sanji will prepare a dish with the snow snow fruit as a garnish for Nami or Robin, warning them about it, but Luffy eats it before hearing that.
• Luffy eats oranges off the tree in a fit of hunger, and accidentally consumes the Snow fruit.

I do believe that eating two devil fruits can cause issues, you are suddenly having two different wills, two different desires interfused with every single part of your body. I could see this causing your body to rip itself apart as Blueno stated.

Luffy would likely be suffering, possibly even having his lifespan shorten even further than it already has been by Ivankov, and use of Gear 2nd. Most importantly, I think this will be a chance for Luffy to interact, or view the will of the one who made the Nika fruit. In this case, I am assuming that it would be Joyboy, but it's possible he is just one of many holders of the fruit in a large cycle. Since one piece is all about inherited will, why should Joyboy be the first with that will? Because he's the one who quite possibly created Wano, the poneglyphs and more.

Interacting with this will may allow for Luffy to see things that nobody else can. It might let him gain some insight into how the world government works, and was founded. About what the ancient kingdom stood for. About how it fell, and about Joyboy's promise to the people of Fishman island, and perhaps other areas of the world.

Luffy has a habit of helping others fulfill the will of their ancestors, or even their own desires, being the warrior of liberation. He saved the Marines from Morgan, he saved Cacoyashi village from Arlong, Alabasta from Crocodile, Skypeia from Enel, Fishman Island from Hody, Dressrosa from Doflamingo, and Wano from Kaido.

Why stop helping people? If Luffy agrees with Joyboy's ideas, he will end the cycle of Joyboy's inherited will, and complete what the Ancient Kingdom could not, even if it means destroying the redline, revealing the Eve tree from Maryjoise, and opening the way for an age of freedom.

Surviving eating two devil fruits

If Luffy is incapacitated like this, and dying there is no Ivankov nearby to hormone boost him into regenerating. No nearby Law to create a room to try and stitch him back together. But we do have a doctor who wants to be able to cure everything. I think that while Luffy is off in this 'higher dimension' that Vegapunk mentions, coming to understand the history of Joyboy and his will. That Chopper will be desperately trying to find a cure. A means of extracting devil fruit power from Luffy.

How could he do this? Using the knowledge of Vegapunk and egghead, lineage factor and other made-up but cool sounding terms to extract the power of the Snow fruit, and helping Luffy's body stay together. Zoro, the King of Hell perhaps literally fighting off death. Sanji preparing food that will help his body overcome it. Nami navigating to a location that would be helpful under Robin's guidance. Franky stitching Luffy together with some cybernetic parts that keep needing to be replaced, Brooke singing to keep morale high, Jimbei having to face that he may not be able to keep his promise to Ace, and Usopp begging Luffy to come back, because it's shown to work in Enes Lobby.

In the end Chopper will have cured something thought incurable, and Luffy will have a reason to continue the war he started for Robin against the world government. This time not just helping a rebellion against a tyrant, but leading the Rebellion against Imu.

I believe after this Robin could reveal... that she knew most of what Luffy learned leading to a mildly comedic scene of eye bulging, and her saying it didn't feel right to spoil the mystery for them until she had all the information.

What could be learned from Joyboy's will?

There are a plethora of things, though one thing I am certain will not be revealed is what the one piece is, though how to get there without the fourth road poneglyph is a possibility.

Other things that I don't know how else we could find a satisfying answer to:

  • Zunesha's crime
  • How the ancient kingdom fell
  • Why the Nefritari's rejected moving to the holy land
  • The meaning of the Will of D.
  • What the ancient weapons were created for
  • The founding of Wano, and creation of poneglyphs
  • The reason that Impel Down is built from the bottom of the seafloor up, as well as other "government" buildings

When would this happen?

I think this would have to happen soon, after egghead, before any raid on the holy land by pirates, and before reaching Laugh Tale.

Is this theory full of holes? Probably, though I don't see them. Will it happen? I think someone will have flashbacks to the void century, be it Imu, or Zunesha, or the Five Elders we are going to see flashes of it. This is simply the best way I can think of to write one piece and reveal information in a somewhat satisfying way.

Yes I did post this theory earlier, but I added some references, and expanded a bit upon it. The pages are from the official Viz translations, except for the colored Sunny image, I am unsure of its origin.
