Edinburgh Uni is an excellent education establishment and frequently featured in THS (Times Higher Education) supplement as one of the top unis in the 🌎, so it's fair to say that it attracts either the brightest minds, legacies and/or the deepest pockets.
Considering what was featured/implied in the show and how these may reflect family money, generational wealth etc...it got me thinking about who may hv been the wealthiest from the 4 characters we know that graduated.
Dex - able to afford copious holidays/ large family home in the country/ help buying his lovely bachelor pad/able to pursue a career in media (this industry pays v little initially) / mothers inheritance that allowed him to buy cafe.
Callum - degree in computer science/ large house in Central London that he shared w Sylvie/Jasmine/ posh car (4x4?)/ owning 4 retail shops by his early 30s.
Tilly - flat purchased in Clapton /pricy looking wedding in a stately home w maze in grounds 💔😍/ able to afford 3 kids.
Emma - at Edinburgh for her brain and she's described as working class. She herself said, during her speech at Tilly's wedding, that she didn't think she was the 'Edinburgh type' (paraphrasing)
Its possible that 💰 may also be a reason Dex/Callum kept in touch after their studies?
I'd conclude that Callum had more money than Dex, even tho Dex was more flamboyant. If anyone can shed any light on this (from film/book) it'll be great to hear your views
Just an aside - Universities are free in Scotland (for all Scottish and EU students; students from England pay c £9,000 per year). In the 1980s Edinburgh University would have been free for all UK students, with students not from wealthy families receiving a maintenance grant toward living expenses. That said, I think Dex was the richest family, not sure about Callum, don't think he was from very wealthy background.
