In 70s, hitchhiking was a common way to get around for those who didn’t have a car or too young to drive. While hitchhiking seems unthinkable today, it once symbolized the freedom and trust that defined the open road in the '70s.

I would never dream of even trying to hitchhike, given I can barely ever get a cab to stop for me in cities like Miami.
I remember at 11 years old having a major wipeout on my bike on a trail and people (all white) just stepping around me while I lay bleeding on the ground, not even asking how I was. And then when I eventually got up and rode home, not a single person who passed me driving or walking asked me how I was.
One of the many ways being black in America is not a fun time

There’s also that couple in Oregon where a lady passed up some hippies to go with the couple for hitchhiking and ended being a sex slave kept under their bed for like two decades or something
Edit: Colleen Stan and it was 7 years in a box
