At the shelter, they were scared and nippy. Since leaving, they haven’t had any issues. They’re precious.
The 12 year old male is realllllly depressed :(
I run a herding breed rescue, and it always makes me so happy calling vet references and hearing about cattle dogs living to 17, 18, 19 years old. They’re insanely active dogs in their youth, but it pays off for it in the end.
They were terrified and biting at the shelter staff. Haven’t had any issues since. The shelter they were at tries their best, but it’s obviously not a fun place to be.
I wonder what the shelter crisis would look like if pet friendly housing was accessible. The last local shelter survey I read, the #1 reason for surrender was housing.
Heelers really do live life to the fullest until the very end.
That’s insane!! Travel is temporary, dogs are forever. I travel quite a bit and sometimes, boarding costs more than my actual trip. But that’s part of having pets. Also, I pay to board homeless dogs that aren’t even mine. If I can’t afford to, I don’t travel. There’s no way they’re going back to the shelter.
Especially when they’re this old! Rehoming a 2 year old dog is sad, but at least they have a whole lifetime to adjust and find a new family to love. Abandoning a 14 year old is just horrible.
DAISY DOO 😭 glad she found you. What a legend.
That’s so kind of you!!

They’re Australian Cattle Dogs, otherwise called red heelers! Just a very frosted faces version.
They’re kind of skin walker-y but that adds to the charm
I try my best to be compassionate and understand why people make the choices they make… but 14?
I just had bloodwork and radiographs done on them. The female has maybe 6 months left. She’d probably have longer if her former owner kept her on heartworm prevention (both of them are HW 😒). She’s on doxy, but she probably wouldn’t survive fast kill HW treatment at this stage. We’re just making her comfortable for now, and treating the 12 year old male.

Those weren’t the only 2 seniors that guy dumped either.. there are still 2 more at the shelter (but they weren’t scheduled for euthanasia so I figured I’d at least prioritize these two, who had a deadline).
