I’ve been addicted to this series since stumbling across the first episode while traversing the Appalachians last fall on an extended road trip across Tennessee, Kentucky, NC, SC, Georgia, Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio. I ❤️❤️❤️ everything about Old Gods, but in particular, Steve’s narration and ability to perfectly lend the perfect amount of emotion, tone and context to all the characters he narrates. The voice talents that give life to all others (The Railroad Man, the Underwoods, Brother Bartholemew, Lavinia etc) have all been absolutely perfect!
So with this being said, I hate to lodge this complaint, but feel it must be said due to the detrimental impact it’s had upon my joyous experience soaking in every second of Old Gods. The actor who voiced Rachel in the last several episodes of the most recent season was quite simply just too much. Until this point, literally every voice for every character was executed perfectly!!! But, Rachel (and the mom in School Spirit) just doesn’t capture the same nuance and subtlety captured just right for every character up until this point. Unfortunately, every time Rachel speaks, it’s SOOOO over the top, overacted, and outright obnoxious. In fact, it actually detracted from those episodes in my opinion as I found it so annoying and out of the ordinary for what I consider to be such an incredibly narrated story. Rachel instantly became my least favorite character of the entire series as a result and detracted from what was an incredible storyline otherwise (Jonah, Skeeter, Rachel).
Personally, I hope this voice actor doesn’t become a regular as she is simply far too dramatic compared to literally every other cast member (even Steve, who some find overly dramatic, but I think is 100% amazing and who MAKES this series such a success).
Old Gods has become one of my favorite productions (film, theatre, books, podcasts) of all time, so publicly airing this grievance means a lot for me. Thanks for listening, family
