I'm a complete novice

I seem to be signed up for Emerald and a received an authentication email. When I sign in and attempt to chat, it will come up with someone, I get a hi, and then I type hi and that's where the problem starts. There's no enter or send that I can find and I quickly get kicked out. What am I doing wrong or am I missing?
