Confused about Office 2016 C2R and how to update

I have a directory of all the local files, and all the required update .msp files in the \updates folder, courtesy of OSD.

Do I need to do anything to update Office before installation? Or do I just keep all the files in the \updates folder and they're automatically applied during install? I notice even on more current devices, it takes a LONG time (15 minutes at least) for Office to go from finalizing the installation to actually done. Is there something I can be doing with these updates to pre-apply them to the source files to avoid updating them after installation?
