Economy Sucks, Job Industry Sucks, Education Is Fake, Greener Pastures elsewhere?
Post Body

Just wanted to rant about my current situation.

I'm a graduating senior this year from my course, and I'm a full-ride talent scholar in my university program. I'm set to graduate with Latin Honors with a 3.64/4 GPA, but the thing is, the industry I'm in is naturally less developed and less in demand in our country than in others. For reference, my course is Music Production and Audio Engineering.

Because of this, wala masyadong trabaho to be honest na available, pati mga profs ko mostly freelance and sila na nga yung mga big time composers and engineers in the business. It just feels kind of like the grind that schools put students through, in promise of being compensated better when it's time for job hunting, is fake, especially in an industry na hindi naman kasi gaanong kalaki yung demand.

Our society as a whole doesn't really value or pay artists, I mean, generally even internationally, the music and audio business has been in such a shifting landscape ever since streaming and the commoditization and accessibility of recording gear, but even more so in our country, na halos bilang lang din talaga ang hyper-developed cities like Manila and Cebu as examples, which in turn means that most of the opportunities are all concentrated in these areas.

Anyways, I've been looking for internships for about 2 years now, ever since my sophomore year, and I've applied to about 10 audio production houses, and they all usually say the same thing, either

  1. Hiring freeze kasi wala masyado kliente dahil sa pandemya
  2. Cant accomodate interns kasi puro WFH
  3. With my credentials and portfolio, gumawa nalang daw ako ng sarili kong negosyo and find clients on my own.

Sa totoo lang, nakakadismaya kasi, kaya ko nga kailangan magpa experience muna, kasi although my credentials and portfolio are great, iba din to have real work experience, chaka malamang as someone whose just about to graduate, in their early 20s, I need to secure a source of income muna before even thinking of starting a business and looking for my own clients. :')

I'm set to graduate in August, isa nalang subject ko which is my OJT from May to July, kaso di ko nga din alam kung saana ko papasok kasi wala din namang tumatanggap lolz. Meron din daw sa school namin, kaso ineencourage kami sa labas kumuha kasi better to get a paying internship in a company/position in a field na gusto na raw namin mag specialize in, which at this point seems just impossible to find even just an open position for interns.

I mean I kind of knew na ito yung mararating ko, kaya sinigurado ko na I would pay for my own tuition via a scholarship instead of asking my parents to pay for it since di ko din naman alam kung ma R-ROI ko agad yung degree ko, pero grabe, when it's the pressure of putting your own food on the table din, ang hirap nung mental pressure of it all.

I really wanna stay in the Philippines because syempre lahat ng mga kaibigan ko pati direct family ko nandito, pero parang nagiging biktima talaga ako ng brain drain/greener pastures mentality. Kung di din naman na aaprecciate yung skills ko dito, might as well look for somewhere else to plant roots if given the opportunity to do so abroad... Hay ewan LOL sorry for the rant. Baka may makarelate lang din in a different field since alam ko medyo konti lang din kumukuha ng course na ito.
