Seeking advice on my mom’s housing situation

Post Body

Hi there,

I hope everyone is doing okay and holding on.

I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this so apologies in advance. I’ve called and emailed my moms caseworker so many times and haven’t gotten a response back. I know she’s busy but it feels horrible.

My mom has Multiple sclerosis and Bipolar disorder. She’s been on ODSP for as long as I can remember but she’s never secured subsidized housing.

We’ve always lived in places that ate up 70 percent or more of her budget. These days rent takes basically everything and my siblings and I have to put money together for the bills and groceries.

She applied for RGI housing with the city in 2018 but she’s like 10 years away from hearing back according to the agent I spoke to.

I recently found out that my mom had an open application from the mid 2000s but my emotionally abusive dad closed the application. He left her shortly after and hasn’t supported us at all since he left.

I’m really frustrated and angry but I want to focus on solutions. Would it be possible to get someone from the RGI office to look at my mom’s case? I understand the need for equality and the whole first come first serve thing but my mom got screwed pretty badly.

We’ve lived in poverty our whole lives and we’re all emotionally and cognitively stunted as a result. I’d really like to get my mom in a better situation so we aren’t In survival mode every month and we can put in the time and effort to begin building our own lives and working on our own physical and mental health(probably a pipe dream but fingers crossed). We’re all at our limit and sometimes dying seems like the only solution to these never ending problems. We’ve faced eviction 2 times in the last year and we’re currently in a difficult agreement with the landlord that would see us get evicted without another trial at the LTB if we are a day late or penny short on a single rent payment.

I’d appreciate any advice you guys could share.

In the mean time I hope and pray that all of us who have been living like this catch a good break soon. I think we deserve peace and relief.

Peace and love.
