Asgard's Wrath (PC) on the Quest 3 - Frustration until I fixed the settings, then it's an amazing experience

Post Body

Never followed or felt interested in Asgard's Wrath on the pc when it was released (likely the cost and never catching it on sale). A week or so ago downloaded Asgard's Wrath II since it was free with the Quest 3 purchase. Played the opening scene along with the summary of the previous game and was blown away. Decided before playing any further that I wanted to play the first game first. Checked my Oculus library and it turns out I had free access to it for whatever reason (maybe it was a backdated Quest 2 purchase).

Downloaded and installed the game. Tried it with virtual desktop and it was flip book quality frame rate. Looked gorgeous until I moved around. Worse experience if I tried it with Oculus Link or AirLink. What sort of worked was dialing all the setting to low and 60% (kept anti-aliasing and post processing to Epic) which seemed to make the game playable but still look gorgeous. Frame rate still sucked and when I got to the Tyr fight had to drop everything to low to even finish the fight (bow would glitch out otherwise).

That ticked me off enough to dig deeper. Fortunately, other people had similar issues and various solutions. Found an Optimizing Oculus Link post along with a disable Temporal Anti-Aliasing post that detailed setting changes. Messed around a bit so I can't explain exactly which portion fixed the issue or which was not necessary. Whatever it was that finally did it, it worked. Launched up Saga III in the story and experienced the buttery smooth visuals and game play that was promised. It went from tolerating (great visuals but low or lost frame rate) to loving it. Only on Saga III (the blind monk), but will be finishing it along with the side-quests and challenges. Great game.

For reference, I'm on a 4060 RTX laptop. I set Virtual Desktop to 72hz over 5ghz wi-fi. The game settings are still at 60%, with anti-aliasing and post processing at high, shadows and texture at low, and the rest at medium.

I do think the developers would benefit from optimizing this game for play over Virtual Desktop, Link, and Air Link on both the Quest 2 and 3. My understanding it worked without issue on the CV1 and Rift S, but those are not the most common Meta headsets anymore. And this title is still triple A in quality.
