Why yes Virginia Alex, yes it does.
OR: What do the names in Oxenfree mean, anyway?
ALEX
Full name: Alexandra
You signed up for this, Alexandra.
Alexandra is the female form of the name Alexander, which itself is the romanization of the Greek Alexandros.
In Greek, Alexandros means "Defending men" or "defender of men". Its root word alexein means "to ward off, defend, or protect".
What is perhaps most interesting, though, is it direct connections to Greek mythology. Alexandra is an alternate name for Cassandra, the prophetess and daughter of King Priam of Troy. She was given the power of prophecy by the God Apollo, but he cursed her to never be believed by those around her. She was considered insane and often was locked in a pyramid by her father. She attempted to stop the Trojan War from occurring, but failed.
Alexandra is also one of the epithets or titles usually given to the goddess Hera and in that context means "one who comes to save warriors".
Draw your own conclusions from that one.
JONAS
How are you her step-brother?
Jonas is the Greek transliteration of Jonah. The name "Jonas" itself means "dove" in Hebrew. It can also be said to mean "a gift from God" when considering its origin in Jonah. Its interpretation as "destroyer" comes from...the Bible.
Jonah was often used in sailing parlance to refer to any person or thing that would bring bad luck to a vessel; given its associated story in Abrahamic text, this is unsurprising.
REN
Full name: Reginald
...we won't slaughter the rest of your friends, like young Reginald here.
Reginald is a Germanic name roughly meaning "adviser to the ruler". It is fitting, then, that he is the closest individual to Alex (the leader of the group) at the beginning of the game.
NONA
It's okay Nona...you didn't do anything wrong.
Likely comes from the Christian Saint Nona, about whom little is known.
Fitting.
CLARISSA
It's over for Clarissa, she's gone.
Clarissa is derived from the Latin clarus, meaning "bright, clear, or famous". Given what we know about the character, two out of three ain't bad.
MICHAEL
Michael! Say it! You can't take me to the water's edge of an idea and then not jump in!
Michael is a Hebrew name, meaning "Who is like God?" The Archangel Michael led the armies of God against Satan in the climactic battle for Heaven, and is often seen as a protector.
