Using Proton Mail is basically the same as using PGP/GPG with any other email provider. But most people don’t want to deal with the hassle. Also most senders are not going to use PGP to send to you so your mail is still getting read the whole way in transit to Proton Mail.
So they may be running an AI comparable to Google or other free providers but no one is actively reading email. That is way too time intensive. I have worked with plenty of big companies to know all their scanning is automated. Very rarely does it require manual intervention.
It’s not “way easier”. All email providers scan every single email you receive to deliver targeted ads. I would actually argue a work or school email is safer in this regard. Most employers will scan incoming email for potential threats or inappropriate content, but they are NOT actively reading your email. Google IS.

Please explain to me which email provider(s) you think provide you with privacy. The correct answer is none.
