I'm new(ish) to Opnsense.
This is the exact issue I'm having - but I didn't see a resolution: https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=29363.msg141828#msg141828
I checked the FreeBSD-HW compatibility list before I started this project to make certain I had the best possible outcome. The Realtek 8156 USB 3.0 NIC is on the compatibility list for FreeBSD13 (which to what I'm aware of is what OPNsense is running) I'm on Proxmox 7.3-3; USB passthru usb0 & usb1 (Realtek 8156) 8gb ram, 2c, 120gb ssd. OPNsense 22.7.9_3-amd64 and FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE-p5. I have a 1gb/1gb fiber ISP handoff and ONT knocks it down to copper. I can run that into my laptop and speedtest around 900mbps each way. I can take the USB nic and plug that into a W11 laptop and speedtest around 915mbps each way. Setup out of the box with proxmox USB passthrough to OPNsese - I get about 60mbps. I've tested everything - so I know it all works. I'm just thinking it's a driver issue - only I have zero clue how to check FreeBSD. I'm 100x more comfortable in linux at the CLI.
Cross referenced this: https://www.freebsd.org/releases/13.1R/hardware/ for my 8156 driver. It says the device is supported by the cdce driver (zero clue what that is)
If someone can help me out - that would be greatly appreciated. (It is not a free resource / hardware issue)
Found another post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PFSENSE/comments/nqg714/448_mbitssec_usb_25gbe_nic_rtl8156_pfsense/
I can see that they are using USB3.0 (at least at the hardware level - I don't know if FreeBSD see's it the same way? I thought if it was supported at the kernel level - it would be pretty magic-sauce straight away with no extra shenanigans.)
