OP-1 field: audio level mysteries
Post Body

Hello! I recently started using an OP-1 field, and I'm noticing some weird behavior from it related to audio levels.

  1. Why are the presets so loud that they peak by default?

At the default values for the mixer (99) and tape record level (about 75%), a majority of the built-in synth presets and drum hits are peaking (that is, the level meter on the right fills all the way and there's noticeable crackling). I'm having to turn down the tape record level every time I turn it on, since it resets every time the device boots up. Is there any explanation for why it's like this?

2) Why are the values on the mixer gauges so low?

When I have my tape mixed to what I assume is a normal level (with the level meter going 1 or 2 dots above the line at the loudest points), the gauges in the mixer for each track BARELY move. They don't even get to the lowest numbers. And even if I intentionally record at an extremely high volume, it takes multiple stacked notes on the same track to even get halfway up. What's the point of those gauges if they only move when the audio level for that track is unusably loud?

I'm having a great time making music on this thing, but I'm very confused by both of these. I hope I'm missing something obvious here... any help?
