I feel like Dan loved Nathan more in the first season but he seemed to have a better connection with Lucas. Like when they trade literary references and every conversation that they have in season 4 (before the obvious ). He also seems to be less competitive while dealing with Lucas and also wanted to be a part of Sawyer's life. In season 9 he seems to care more abut being a part of Jamie and Lydia's life than Nathan's. I feel like his personality never gelled with Nathan's.
And Lucas allowed it? Oh that is surprising
