To war! To war! To glory, to victory!
A life for the king! Just one’s all he needs, Of possible thousands;
A life for the king! A couple or few, Not a big ask, For this great a victory, Conquest awaits!
A life for the king! About ten, maybe twenty, Not quite so much, For the battle ahead;
A life for the king! Fifty or so, Some great courage required, For so many souls;
A life for the king! A hundred or two, A fair few to lose, But sacrifice yields glory, Even greater than this!
A life for the king! Some thousands on end, To go die in droves But all for good, All for good.
And now the enemy, With power unmatched, Reaps her glittering reward, The glory, the lustre, The sweet taste of victory;
Away, A life for the king, A life for the king.
And now one must wonder, What did it bring? But malice, And horror And grief unfathomed.
