To Learn
He'd journey to the future
never to return.
A one way trip with just enough
rocket fuel to burn.
He'd leave tomorrow
never to again see present day,
for he knew he'd value more
the things he'd learn along the way.
He packed his bags and steeled
himself to leave his life behind.
This decision had been made
because the world had been unkind.
The world refused to feed
his need to understand it more,
so he searched and scanned and worked
to find this time-travel back door.
Before he left, she held his hand
and begged him not to go.
But now the deed was done,
and he had nothing left to show.
He thought he'd find a world
of beauty, flying cars and robots,
with more to learn than one man
could have wished, to know hard-fought.
Instead, the future world
had been destroyed by hand of man.
A world of beauty like he'd hoped
was turned from stone to sand.
And now right here, he stood alone,
nothing to understand.
The need to learn unanswered,
how he wished he took her hand.
