And then find that, your life revolves around those beliefs. They are not just there to drive your compulsions (actions/ that sooth down anxiety), but the obsessions also infiltrate how you go about your day, interactions with people, conduct in events and situations, the very core of how you think. Intrusive thoughts come from the underlying beliefs. And beliefs are formed from trauma.
An example of this is, if you were never appreciated as a child, never made to feel like you were worth anything, always compared with other kids and shamed, then you develop a belief that no matter what you do, you will never be good enough....and the consequence of that could be, you just stop caring about fitting in, you stop wanting anything to do with those you were always compared with - that particular type.
And that is what over a period of time, becomes your new status quo, your home, your comfort zone....that you do not want to step out of, because the space outside it, is full of everything that made you feel worthless.
