Smart Lock quirk?

So I have Smart Lock set to my Galaxy Watch as a trusted device. Works about 90% of the time. But several times a day I go to open my phone and it prompts for the PIN. Even though my watch hasn't been away from the phone.
Anyone experienced similar?
