I (24f) am having trouble finding somewhere to live. I currently live in a shared house. The middle of March my landlord did an inspection and told me that the rent was being raised by Ā£100. I was already struggling to pay rent.
Bit of backstory. In November of last year I was signed off work after developing a seizure disorder. As much as I want to work, it really just isnāt possible. I am getting basic rate of universal credit which is about Ā£240. Because I live in a shared house they cannot pay the whole of my rent, so after rent is paid I have Ā£90 left for the rest of bills and food. Now with the increased amount of rent I wouldnāt even have enough money to pay my rent.
When I handed my notice in last month my mum told me that I could live at hers, however since handing my notice in she has told me she doesnāt want me there due to the stress it would put on her because of my seizures.
The council have told me that Iām likely to not be approved for council housing or any other help because I have made myself voluntarily homeless. Although Iām arguing I havenāt because when I handed my notice in I believed I had somewhere to go. Theyāve also advised that I stay put in my place, although I cannot afford to and wait to be evicted, however the room has now been filled.
My seizures are massively affected by stress/anxiety and Iāve started to have a lot more over the last week or so, which I believe is due to this.
Does anyone have any advice? Surely the council cannot tell me to illegally stay in a property? Sorry for such a long post, Iām just feeling very stressed. Iāve gone from having a good job and being very content to have daily seizures and having no way to support myself.
