Hello fellow Elkie lovers,
Recently we took our 3 year old Elkhound to the vet and we got into a discussion about food. She mentioned that there has been issues with dogs who are fed āgrain freeā diets are developing heart issues when their breed typical donāt have heart issues. She said food with some chickpea/lentil yadda is good but the amount matters.
For the past year and a half, we have been feeding our doggo the Acana red meat recipe. Which he loves! He is quite particular and would get bored of others varieties before the bag was over. Prior to that, he was on a raw diet but he is very active and wasnāt able to maintain his weight.
When got home from the vet, of course I searched up his foods specific ingredients. I figured it was okay but I wanted the vetās approval as well so I sent along the ingredients.
She had two concerns - one the fact that raw meat is used (thatās not a big deal to me. Heās a dog and the risk of bacteria seems low) and the second being the amount of pseudo-grains (chickpeas etc) in the food.
TLDR: what the heck do you feed your dog?! Weāre also Canadian if that makes a difference
There is a local to me company that sells freeze dried sardines and omg the smell is horrid but I can understand the benefits!!!
Oh no, I take it all with a grain of salt. I trust our vet as she was really encouraging studied foods and wasnāt pushing the only brand they sell at the clinic. Itās pure curiosity what others are doing!

I realized I didnāt specify that his food is grain inclusive. She was just concerned that there was still too much chickpea etc
