I have personally suffered from severe cognitive decline as a result of long-term insomnia and sleep deprivation. My treatment regimen for this cognitive decline relies heavily on many nootropics and medications that are effective in combating Alzheimer's. This is in part due to the fact that cognitive decline from sleep deprivation results in similar kinds of damage to the brain.
I recently came upon a mangosteen tea and decided to try it out after reading about the effects of mangosteen on cognitive decline: it has shown to heal neuronal damage, and specifically neurons involved in acetylcholine transmission. However, this has only been demonstrated in animal models and in vitro models, by a common group of Chinese researchers across the studies, which is always a reason to be cautious.
I have had consistent beneficial cognitive effects from this tea that have surpassed "normalization" (what I would consider to be a restoration of baseline functioning, a reversal of damage, nothing more). I've had some serious nootropic effects beyond just mere baseline functioning that I've only experienced on four substances: serotonergic psychedelics, cannabis, modafinil, huperzine A. I am very excited about this plant and its potential, what I have experienced so far is extremely promising.
Because I use absolutely hundreds, hundreds upon hundreds of herbal teas, specific foods and supplements and experiment with them, with different outcomes (with or without foreknowledge of their pharmacology or effects), I am almost entirely certain it's not a placebo. Almost. Which is why I am posting here.
I am wondering if anyone has any experiences with this particular plant, or any further knowledge of its pharmacology that could explain its effect of me. If you are interested, teas of it cost like 2-3 dollars.
Here's some of the research on it in connection to Alzheimer's:
