Checking a bag for international flight

I’ve never checked a bag while flying standby because it’s obviously safer not to, but I have a trip to Cancun and I’m flying standby. The flights are not the best but there’s still a chance I get on at least one of them. My question is what would happen if I check in a bag for my first flight but not able to get on that flight and end up catching one of the later ones. Would my bag still go to Cancun without me or would they pull off the plane? Any suggestions?
