Is anyone else surprised that there isn’t a ‘modern warfare’ themed anime?
Post Body

Hey everyone,

Long time lurker and first-time poster here and I didn’t know where to post this. Credible defence would be like ‘Wtf is this shit’ and r/anime for some reason prefer cute slice of life romcoms so that leaves NCD.

Anyway, lately I’ve noticed a trend. Besides the obvious waifus and anime girls on the sub I’ve also noticed that weebs for some reason like the idea of cute anime girls with guns (tactical waifus) or cute anime girls crewing tanks and even fucking battle ships. I was even surprised to find that in Japan there is a hardcore community that is into airsoft and tactical gear. I weas even shocked by the sheer amount of weebs in the military and here I thought the military was full of hardcore warrior gym bro types. With the demographic there I am surprised that the anime industry hasn’t taken a page out of the Hollywood’s military propaganda machine. Of all the batshit crazy anime plots (looking at you Isekai genre) in existence there doesn’t seem to be many modern military themed anime and yes I know GATE exists but that was more JDSF vs medieval world which quickly turned into a weird harem. When I mean ‘modern warfare’ I mean no mechs and all grounded infantry base combat from a grunts perspective.

Seriously hear me out.

Have a bland looking Japanese 17-18 year old school boy/college student/salary man (so the audience can self-insert into) who joins the JSDF either because he is an otaku/NEET/shut in with nothing going for him or out of patriotic duty to Japan (the writer can choose depending on the agenda) and through military training gets fit, confident and finds a purpose in life (you see where I’m going with this). Yes, I know actual military life is shit, I’ve been there, if recruitment was honest I wouldn’t have joined either. Besides nobody wants to watch an anime about a bunch of dudes pulling weeds and rocks out of the battalion garden, clearing the shed and putting it all back again, bureaucratic clusterfucks or cleaning the same weapons/vehicles a hundred times over. Anyway......

Have meticulous animation of accurate reloading drills, contact drills, maneuverer fire and support section attacks, urban warfare, room clearing drills and combat shooting. Also deck out our MC in tacticool Gucci multicam clothing, plate carriers/chest rigs/boots/armour/helmet and other Gucci kit that most airsoft nerds would get hard over. Bonus points for overly accurate animations of decked out kitted up rifles, optics, NVG mounts, radios and fancy attachments. On top that have our MC and squad mates do cool shit like ride on top of tanks, ride quad/dirt bikes, rappelling out of helicopters or ride rigid motorboats going on boarding action or coastal raids. Yes, my fellow vet bros I know, just go with it.

For the tread heads and tank nerds show off armored vehicles and heavy equipment (tanks/APC’s/IFV’s/places/helicopters/arty etc.) from the JSDF and allies (US and friends) to the point that it seems like every defence company is funding the studio itself. We're talking naval battle groups in formation, USAF squadrons flying also in formation and armored warfare maneuvers.

Now for the plot, just rip it out of some cliché war movie. One day China/Soviet Union (if the Russians were COD /Tom Clancy levels competent)/North Korea/fictional superpower if we don’t want to piss off any real countries invades Japan and our MC joins the fight whether by choice or not, becomes a fit confident man, performs acts of valor that would have every bravery medal thrown at him, comes home to a parade and a hero's welcome and gets the cute waifu from school/uni/work because there's always a cute anime girl involved or else no one would watch it.

If you want to go full anime with teenaged protagonist and tragic background story, have a former child soldier who grew up fighting in the ‘totally not Cambodia/Rwanda/Myanmar civil war’ struggling to fit into Western society and normal teenage school life dealing with PTSD, social isolation, drug addiction, alcoholism, not being able to connect or belong with his classmates while trying to avoid ending up in a gang. While that is playing out there is a slow growing threat in the background from 'definitely not Russia/China' that eventually requires MC to once again take up arms to defend his new homeland, girlfriend, family and friends (yes, I know power of friendship trope).

If I could draw manga, I would have started on it but unfortunately, I can’t draw for shit and light novels aren’t a thing in Australia, not like I could write to save my life anyway. What do you all reckon? Would the JSDF use it for recruitment material? Would you watch it? What would you add? What story would you write instead? Any pointless shit posting welcome.

Edit: Have the composer of the 86 and Attack on Titan soundtrack work on the soundtrack during epic battle scenes and emotionally damaging sad moments.
