Does complimenting someone for their positive nature put pressure on them?

Does complimenting someone for being positive/funny/upbeat/etc put pressure on them to act that way all the time? I like to compliment people when it makes sense to do so, but I wonder if I am accidentally pigeonholing people into acting only a certain way around me, which is something I really don't mean to do. I want the people in my life to be themselves.
