I was told in school that we don't feel the earth spinning because we're in an inertial frame of reference. But how can that be if we're not going in a straight line (we're spinning)?

Post Body

If you travel in a straight line at a constant speed you're in an inertial frame of reference.

But we're not travelling in a straight line... are we? Going both around the sun and spinning on an axis?

Moreover, people at the equator are spinning a lot faster than people nearer the poles. Why don't they spin off with the centrifugal force?

Comments

It also has to deal with just how huge the earth is. It’s spinning really fast but we don’t notice because it’s a gigantic mass
