How do I convince my room mate to use the dishwasher to clean their dirty dishes?

So I (25M) have a room mate (18M) who is nice enough and keeps to themselves, but their hygiene is quite awful and they can be quite lazy. Any dirty dishes, plates, cups, saucepans and cups are left on the side for days before he eventually decides to hand wash them all after saying he doesn't have enough time to do them straight away. This has lead to us getting flies hovering...We have a perfectly functional dishwasher that they refuse to use, their excuse being that they haven't used one before but I've shown them how to use it multiple times

Hopefully someone has some advice...
