Hello!
Most of my knowledge of American football comes from watching Blue Mountain State and that Kevin Costner movie The Draft, but I did do some research on the draft because the idea behind it is really fascinating to me, who is only really familiar with European leagues and sports.
I noticed that being the first pick of the draft is a big deal and that much I can understand, you'd want to be the number one choice in the country, even if just for the sound of that. But since the first teams to pick in the draft are the ones that were doing the worst last year, presumably you'd want to avoid being drafted by any of those "Small City Weaklings" kind of teams, and have one of the top teams choose you that picks their player later, no?
But that may just be me trying to apply European sports logic to American football. Maybe the young players know that they have no chance of getting enough time on the field in the best teams with the best players, so they're eager to play for a team that needs them? Or maybe there's no such thing as a "top tier team" and no team stays on top for longer than a year or two, and the same with weak teams? Or perhaps there's something that I'm missing entirely?
I'd appreciate any help!
Thanks!
