Why can't they just drill more wells in places like, Southern California, to get fresh water.

Post Body

So I was thinking about this, and maybe I'm totally off my rocker here, but maybe not. I dunno.

So in places near the ocean, there is high ground water tables. Obviously too close to the water, and that ground water probably has a lot of salt in it. But if you went far enough away from the ocean where there was enough rock and sand and such between the ocean and where you are, and drilled down, wouldn't you find fresh water?

And because the ocean is so close, wouldn't it get replenished pretty quickly, compared to other places that rely on rain or snow to replenish it?

So then, following my (obviously stupid because if I'm thinking of it then others must have proven this wrong by now) thought pattern here, if they were do drill a bunch of wells, lets say, 5 miles in land from the ocean, couldn't that supply the LA area with a ton of fresh water?

My main thought for this is the old trick where you can get fresh clean water (mostly) by digging a hole a few feet way from a lake.
