Why don't we replace the maps we use with maps that proportionately show the size of countries?

Also while we're at it, I'm in North America, so the maps we use are split between Asia and NA with NA on the West side and the rest of the world on the East. Is it different for other countries? Feel like the way maps represent the world has a lot of impact in the way some people perceive the globe.
