Can someone explain that viral Facebook equation to me? 6 ÷ 2(1 + 2)
Post Body

So most people are saying 9 (which I'm fairly certain is wrong), and I get 1.

Most people are solving it as follows:

(6 ÷ 2) x (1 2)

3 x 3 = 9

Originally I solved it like this :

2(x y) = 2x 2y

Therefore, 2(1 2) = (2 4) = 6

Therefore, 6 ÷ 2(1 2) = 6 ÷ (2 4) = 6 ÷ 6

Looking at it though, I realise that perhaps I'm using the distributive property wrong (treating it as one step). Is it more correct that this is a two step process?

That is, is it more correct to do it this way:

6 ÷ 2(1 2) = 6 ÷ 2 4 = (6 ÷ 2) 4 = 3 4 = 7

I'm pretty confident in my original answer of 1, but would like either comfirmation or an explanation as to why I'm wrong

Tl;dr: what's the answer to 6 ÷ 2(1 2), and why?

EDIT: Proof that the answer is 1-

6 ÷ 2(x 2) = 1
