What Is the Ellen Game Show Where People Fall Down and A Question about Empathy?
Post Body

I was watching a YouTube video of how dumb Americans can be, and I in a few of the scenes, it seems to be this game show where Ellen DeGeneres asks a trivia question, and if the contestant gets it wrong, she presses a button and they fall into the abyss?

I have so many questions about this, and honestly find it disturbing:

  1. Who would sign up for this?? It's not like they want to fall, one of them was even crying before Ellen pushed the button. Seems pretty traumatic, if you ask me, which is why I was disturbed by it.
  2. Where do they go? Do they get hurt? All I see is them disappear into nothingness.
  3. I assume this to be true, but they do actually choose this and know the consequences, right? Like, they sign some thing?
  4. Lastly, less specific to this show, but anyone else get almost physically sick from watching others suffer in this way, even if you assume it's consensual? I know I did. I got nauseous and it made me upset. I feel like this is normal human empathy, but that can't be true if these kinds of shows are popular.
