Why are Airplane tickets so expensive right now?

I'm assuming it is because of the virus but are they limiting a lot of flight now? I flew from JFK to Rome for $300 non stop 4 months ago. Now they are $3000 per person plus 18 hour plus flights.
Will they go down soon?
