How do I get adjusted to a different time zone for vacation?

Hello everyone I’m on the East coast US and will be going to Rome in 2 weeks. Out flight leaves at 5P and we arrive there at 7A their time. (Midnight EST) What’s your tips for jet lag? Should I sleep on the plane the whole time?
