Are there musical note systems other than the one which dominates Western music?
Post Body

I have a background in physics so I understand about waves, harmonics, etc and why the note system works. What I am wondering about is whether this is the only system. Could there not be music systems with 10 or 14 notes? Could all the notes not be shifted by some factor? As long as the harmonic relations are respected I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Or is there something privileged about the particular notes that means humans everywhere, including in previously isolated cultures, have all identified them?
