Why was the appearance of Smiley/emoji-based text changed? Was this announced somewhere, and can I go back to displaying the previous (much better imo) appearance? [Image comparison examples below]

This isn't really a big deal or anything, I was just curious why this was changed and if it was announced somewhere. Seems to have been changed if you browse on a PC at least, not sure about mobile (I only use a desktop). "Don't fix it if it ain't broke".
